Trailblazing Women in Black History: Black Women Who Shaped Women’s Health

Throughout history, Black women have made incredible contributions to society, often without the recognition they deserve. From groundbreaking advances in science and medicine to fighting for civil rights and social justice, their stories have paved the way for progress in every area of life.

In honor of Black History Month, we want to celebrate a few trailblazing women whose achievements not only shaped history but continue to inspire generations of women today. These unsung heroes broke barriers and challenged the status quo, leaving a lasting impact on fields like healthcare, education and social change. Their legacies remind us of the importance of empowerment, education and wellness for every woman.

At Akira Medical Imaging + Wellness, we are proud to care for women from all diverse backgrounds, offering services like mammograms, DEXA scans and gynecological well-woman visits to help women take charge of their health. It’s only fitting that we highlight women who fought for better health outcomes and equality, laying the groundwork for the services we provide today.

Black Women Who’ve Paved the Way for Women’s Health

Dr. Rebecca Lee CrumplerDr. Rebecca Lee Crumpler: The First Black Female Doctor in the U.S.

In 1864, Dr. Rebecca Lee Crumpler became one of the first Black women to earn a medical degree in the United States. At a time when the medical field was largely closed to women, let alone women of color, Dr. Crumpler’s achievement was a monumental step forward. Her career as a physician was dedicated to providing care for underserved communities, particularly Black women and children.

Dr. Crumpler’s pioneering work in medicine laid the foundation for the healthcare system that we continue to build on today. The Rebecca Lee Pre-Health Society at Syracuse University and the Rebecca Lee Society, one of the first medical societies for African American women, were both established in her honor. Her legacy reminds us of the importance of equitable healthcare for all women and the need for women’s health providers who truly understand the unique challenges women face.

Marie Maynard DalyDr. Marie Maynard Daly: Breaking Ground in Biochemistry

In 1947, Dr. Marie Maynard Daly became the first African American woman in the United States to earn a Ph.D. in chemistry. Her research on the relationship between high blood pressure, cholesterol and heart disease helped shape modern cardiovascular health. Dr. Daly's work also provided insights into the role of nutrition in health—something that remains a critical aspect of overall wellness today.

Her contributions to science, especially in the realm of women’s health, were groundbreaking. The work of Dr. Daly continues to inform how we approach heart health, and her dedication to research reminds us that women’s health is an ever-evolving field, one that requires ongoing attention and innovation.

Dr. Audrey F. ManleyDr. Audrey F. Manley: Championing Health Equity

Dr. Audrey F. Manley served as the first Black woman to become the Director of the U.S. Public Health Service’s Office of Minority Health. A tireless advocate for healthcare equality, Dr. Manley focused much of her career on reducing health disparities, particularly for minority women. Her work in public health policy highlighted the critical need for equal access to healthcare for all women, regardless of race or economic status.

Dr. Manley’s leadership in the fight for health equity reminds us that women’s health is deeply connected to social, economic, and political factors. At Akira, we believe in providing comprehensive care for every woman, empowering them to stay proactive and informed about their health.
