January is designated as National Cervical Health Awareness Month by the National Cervical Cancer Coalition (NCCC), a time dedicated to highlighting issues related to cervical cancer, HPV, and the importance of early detection. The month focuses on empowering women with the knowledge that cervical cancer is largely preventable through vaccination and appropriate screening, aiming to drastically reduce diagnosis rates through education and access to care.

While many of us start the New Year by organizing our homes or creating a wellness plan for ourselves. At Akira Medical Imaging + Wellness, we believe that good health isn't just about reacting to storms; it's about cultivating a strong foundation of prevention. We are here to help you prioritize your health through our comprehensive Well-Woman Gynecologic Care, ensuring you flourish in every season of life.

What Does It Mean to Promote Cervical Health?

For decades, cervical cancer was a formidable shadow over women's health. However, with the introduction of regular screenings and protective measures (vaccinations), we have seen a dramatic shift.

According to the American Cancer Society, the goal of screening is to detect changes in cervical cells before they have the opportunity to develop into cancer. This shift from reactive treatment to proactive prevention is one of the greatest success stories in modern medicine. By staying informed, you are essentially ensuring the ground you stand on is healthy, rich, and capable of supporting you for years to come.

How Does Prevention Work?

Prevention works on different levels.  Seeing a healthcare provider you feel comfortable with for routine exams is very important to ensure cervical health.  Vaccination against the main virus that causes changes to the cervix, Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is important for prevention.

Understanding HPV: The Common Element

HPV is very common. Studies indicate that most sexually active adults will encounter HPV at some point in their lives. In most cases, a healthy immune system can clear the virus naturally, much like rain washing away dust. However, certain strains of the virus can persist and cause changes to cervical cells. Understanding this is not about inducing fear; it’s about being aware of the elements that need careful monitoring.

Screening Guidelines

To ensure your wellness, regular checks are vital. Guidelines from the USPSTF (United States Preventive Services Task Force) generally recommend the following schedule for women aged 30 to 65:

  • Pap Smear Alone: Many guidelines suggest this screening every 3 years.
  • HPV Test Alone: This is often recommended every 5 years.
  • Co-testing (Pap + HPV): Many clinicians consider this the "gold standard," typically performed every 5 years to provide a comprehensive view of your cervical health.

The American Cancer Society recommends screening a bit earlier starting at age 25.  As an alternative to in office HPV testing, a self-collection or self-sampling HPV test is also available.  It is still preferable to have a HPV sample collected in the office however self-collection may be used for those who are not comfortable with a health care provider collecting the sample.

Note: Women over 65 who have had consistent, healthy screenings for years may discuss with their provider if they can stop screening, much like a mature garden that requires less intensive maintenance.
